What a good puzzle does

A puzzle is self-correcting. The piece fits or it does not, so the child gets feedback without an adult ruling on it. That matters more than it sounds: a child who can check her own work will keep going after a mistake, and a child who needs an adult to confirm every step will stop when the adult leaves the room.

The right puzzle is one the child can *almost* do. Too easy and it is finished in a minute and abandoned. Too hard and it is abandoned faster. The sweet spot is frustrating for about ninety seconds and then solvable.

Roughly by age

2 to 3 years. Chunky knobbed pieces, one piece per hole, four to eight pieces. The skill being built is the grip and the idea that a shape has a home.

3 to 4 years. Shape and colour sorting, simple sequences, 12 to 20 pieces. Matching by two properties at once — red *and* triangle — is the step up here.

4 to 6 years. Letters, numbers, pattern boards, simple memory games. This is where a puzzle starts teaching content rather than just dexterity.

6 to 9 years. Logic games, strategy, anything with a rule an adult also has to follow. The best of these get played by the whole family, which is the real test.

What to check

Piece count against patience, not age. The number on the box assumes a child who will sit. If yours will not yet, go lower and let her succeed.

Edges and finish. Run a thumb along every piece. Rough cuts are where cheap manufacturing shows first.

Whether it survives a lost piece. A 20-piece board with one piece missing is ruined. A stacking or matching game usually is not. If your household loses things, buy the forgiving kind.

Small parts under three. If a piece passes through a toilet-roll tube, it is a choking risk.

Honestly

Puzzles will not raise anyone’s IQ, and any listing claiming so is guessing. What they reliably build is the ability to stay with something difficult — and that is worth more than most of what gets sold as educational.
