First Birthday Gift Ideas That Aren’t Clothes

Almost everyone gives clothes at a first birthday. It’s a reasonable instinct — clothes are useful, they can’t be wrong, and the child won’t remember either way. But the parents end up with a pile of outfits in one size, half of which get worn twice before they’re outgrown.

If you want to give something that gets used, it helps to know what a one-year-old is actually doing.

What a one-year-old can genuinely do

Somewhere around the first birthday, most children are pulling themselves up, cruising along furniture, and either walking or about to. They can pick things up deliberately, they can let go on purpose — which is newer and harder than picking up — and they are extremely interested in cause and effect. Press this, something happens. They are also, almost without exception, putting things in their mouths.
