Toys for a 1-Year-Old in India: What They’re Actually Ready For

What a one-year-old actually plays with, the three toys worth the money, and the shelf full of things to leave behind. Prices from ₹189.

At one, your child is not learning colours. They are learning that a cup falls when they let go of it, that a lid comes off, and that the thing in their mouth has an edge.

That is why the toy shelf misleads you at this age. Half the boxes say 12 months and up, and most of them do nothing a steel bowl and a wooden spoon cannot do.

Shopping for toys for a 1-year-old in India is mostly a matter of buying less than you think, and choosing the three or four objects that reward the way a one-year-old actually plays.

The short answer

Three things, about ₹770 all in. A rattle set for gripping and mouthing: the five-piece at ₹229, or the six-piece at ₹269 if it is a gift. A bath set, because water is the one thing a one-year-old returns to for twenty minutes: the Chu Chu 12-piece at ₹349. And a first wooden board, the 16-piece shapes board at ₹189, which is the one wooden toy we stock that is marked for one-year-olds. Everything else on our 1–3 shelf is marked 3 and up on the box, so it can wait. Leave the walker on the shelf.

What a one-year-old is actually doing

Most parents shop for the child they will have in six months. At twelve months, the job looks like this.

Pulling to stand, then cruising. Getting up is easy. Getting down again is harder, and a one-year-old will stand and howl because they have not worked out how to sit. That is a stage, not a fault.

Cause and effect. Drop this and it falls. Bang that and it makes a noise. This is the whole curriculum at one, and it is why a box can entertain longer than a talking toy.

Mouthing. Teeth are arriving and the mouth is a third hand. Anything they can hold will be tasted, so “safe to mouth” is the most useful thing a toy can be.

Putting things in and out. A box and a block become a two-minute game. Then the block goes behind the sofa and the game is about finding it.

One to two minutes per object. Not a problem to fix. Just plan for it.

Toys for a 1-year-old in India: the three worth buying

Wooden Shapes & Colours Puzzle Board — 16-Piece Learning Board₹1891–3 yearspull a shape out, find the hole it came from

A rattle set, ₹229 or ₹269

Both rattle sets are made for the smallest hands: soft materials, no small parts or sharp edges, and rated from birth. The six-piece set at ₹269 is the same idea with one more rattle in the box.

Buy the five-piece for your own child and keep the ₹40. Buy the six-piece when it is a first-birthday gift for somebody else’s child, because a fuller box reads like a present.

A bath set, ₹349

The Chu Chu 12-piece set is what we recommend for water play at this age. The animals are chunky enough to grip and soft enough to squeeze, and a one-year-old will move water from cup to cup for longer than they will play with any battery toy.

The catch with any squeeze toy is inside it. Water gets in and does not all get out, and the inside turns black within weeks. After every bath, squeeze each toy out, shake it, and stand it upside down to dry. The full method is in how to clean bath toys.

We also stock a rubber duck bath set styled like a baby toy. Its box says 3 and up, because of the small parts. Believe the box, not the duck.

A first wooden board, ₹189

The 16-piece shapes board is marked 1–3 years. At twelve months, do not expect a finished puzzle. Pull out four shapes, leave the rest in the board, and let your child lift them out, bang them and drop them. The matching comes closer to two.

The lift-out pieces are small parts, so this is a toy for playing together, kept away from a child who still mouths everything.

Two toys to wait for: the box says 3 and up

People often ask about the Hopping Rabbit at ₹389 and the Beautiful Melody xylophone at ₹299. Both are marked 3 and up on their product pages, so we would not put either in a one-year-old’s hands.

The rabbit hops, lights up, plays music and has a pull rope; the honest downside is that it plays the same music again and again, and it runs on batteries. The xylophone is the first toy where a child taps on purpose, which is a three-year-old skill. If you buy either for an older sibling, keep it out of the one-year-old’s reach.

Safety at this age

Small parts. This is the year everything goes into the mouth. Anything with small parts is not a toy for a one-year-old, however it is advertised, and no toy replaces an adult in the room.

Mould in squeeze toys. Any toy that squirts water is also a toy that holds water. Dry it upside down after every bath, and throw away anything that has gone black inside.

The BIS mark. Look for the mark on the box of anything plastic that goes near a mouth. It is issued to the manufacturer, not the shop, so a shop can only pass on what the box shows. The product pages for the rattle sets and the Chu Chu set list the BIS standard they are made to. If you want to see the licence details for yourself, ask us for a photo of the back of the box, and read how to check the BIS mark for the two-minute check.

What to skip

Sit-in baby walkers. The frame does the walking for the child. We do not sell them.

Battery toys with twenty buttons. It looks educational because it says the alphabet. In practice your child presses one button for twenty minutes and the toy does the talking.

Anything with thirty or more pieces. Counting pieces is a two-year-old job. At one, a box and four chunky shapes is the whole point.

Gift bundles of forty small toys. One good rattle beats forty objects poured onto the floor.

Any toy rated 3 and up for a child who still mouths things. The packaging is not being modest. Small parts are small parts.

Quick questions

Do one-year-olds need an “educational” toy?

No. At one, “educational” mostly means “cause and effect”, and a wooden board with lift-out shapes does that job as well as anything. Buy for what your child is doing this month: gripping, mouthing, dropping, pulling up. The learning is in the repetition, not the label.

Are bath toys safe for a one-year-old?

Yes, if they are large, soft and free of small parts, and if you dry them between baths and supervise. The two real risks are mould inside squeeze toys and water on a slippery floor. Replace anything that has gone black inside or started to crack.

How many toys should a one-year-old have?

Six to eight within reach at a time is plenty, with the rest in a cupboard and swapped every few weeks. A one-year-old cannot choose between twelve things. They will tip the box over and then play with the box.

Is a baby walker a good idea?

We would not buy one. A sit-in walker moves your child along before they have worked out their own balance, and it makes the room harder to childproof. A pull-along toy and a sofa to cruise along do more, and cost less.

Should I choose wooden or plastic at this age?

Either, if the edges are rounded and nothing comes loose. Wood is heavier and quieter on tile; plastic is easier to wash and cheaper. For rattles and bath toys, plastic is the practical choice. For the first puzzle board, wood survives being sat on. Our wooden vs plastic guide has the longer comparison.

Where to go next

We stock twelve toys on the 1–3 year olds shelf. The shelf is grouped by the stage a child is at, not by the age printed on the box, and several toys on it, including the rabbit, the dancing animals and the panda light, are marked 3 and up. Read the age on the product page before you buy. Start with the rattle set and the bath set, and add the shapes board as your child starts to point. If a first birthday is coming up, the guide below does the rest of the thinking.
