Children’s Day Gift Ideas for Kids: What to Buy by Age and Budget

Children’s Day falls on 14 November, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s birthday. In 2026 that is a Saturday, which matters more than it sounds: schools will mostly celebrate on Friday the 13th, and family celebrations will happen over the weekend. If you are ordering online, aim to order by Saturday 7 November. We dispatch the next working day and most of India gets its parcel within two to five days after that.

Children’s Day gifts are a slightly different problem from birthday gifts. You are often buying for more than one child, and sometimes for a whole class. The budget per child is smaller, and the gift has to work for a child you may not know very well. This guide is organised around that.

The short answer

For one child, pick something they can play with on the day without an adult setting it up. For a group, pick one inexpensive toy that works across a wide age range, and buy the same thing for everyone so nobody compares. Avoid anything with small loose parts if there is any chance a child under three will get hold of it.

Gifts under ₹300 (good for a group or a class)

At this price you want something sturdy and simple, that a child can understand in ten seconds.

Buying for a whole class? Our return gifts under ₹300 guide covers bulk buying. The same rules apply here.

Gifts from ₹300 to ₹600 (one good present)

This is the sweet spot for a single child. It is enough money for something that will still be in use in a month.

Gifts over ₹600 (when it is your own child)

  • The crawling squid toy (₹699). It crawls away from you, and your child catches it with a toy fishing rod. It recharges with a built-in battery, so there are no batteries to buy.
  • The 42-piece magnetic sticks set (₹749), for a six-to-nine-year-old who has outgrown simple blocks.
  • A Mini Race RC car (₹1,199) with an easy one-hand grip remote, made for children of three and up who are just learning to steer. Our guide to RC cars by age covers why age matters more than speed.

Matching the gift to the age

AgeWhat worksWhat to avoid
1–3Chunky wooden puzzles, rattles, musical toysAnything with small parts, magnets or button batteries
3–5Bubble guns, simple building blocks, easy RC cars, pretend playToys that need fine fiddling or adult setup every time
5–7Building sets, drawing boards, games with simple rulesToys “for 3+” that they will find babyish within a day
7–9Magnetic construction, strategy games, faster RC carsAnything that only does one thing

Not sure of the age? Our 3–6 and 6–9 collections are a good place to start.

Three things to check before you buy

Is it BIS certified? Toys sold in India are required to carry the ISI mark. It is a basic check that the toy has been tested, and it is worth looking for. Our BIS guide explains what the mark means.

Does it need batteries, and are they in the box? A toy that cannot be played with on the day is a disappointment, however good it is.

Is there a younger sibling at home? A perfectly safe toy for an eight-year-old can still be dangerous for a toddler. Small parts and magnets are the main things to watch for.

A Children’s Day idea that costs nothing

Children remember time more than toys. Give them an afternoon where they choose what everyone plays, including the adults, and nobody looks at a phone. If you need ideas, our list of screen-free activities has plenty that need nothing more than what is already in the house.
